Tonight, I listened to my child sing.
8 PM. The house was quiet, with only the soft glow of the nightlight casting shadows in the corner of the room.
Lying beside my child, holding their tiny hand, I told a bedtime story.
They listened silently.
I thought they might have dozed off, since there was no response—just stillness.
I became more aware of the warmth in their little hand. And then, from somewhere deep inside me… a rhythm began to stir.
I started to hum.
There were no lyrics, no fancy words—just a mother’s heart, lifting its voice in song.
And in that stillness, I heard my child’s voice rise.
He hummed softly, gently melody, staring at the wall bathed in blue light.
He hummed… and hummed…
We often think of music appreciation as something elaborate—perhaps vibrant songs, colorful instruments, or playful activities.
But is it?
The simplest way to begin music appreciation with your child is through your voice.
I realized something important:
WE CAN START CONNECTING WITH OUR CHILD THROUGH OUR VOICE.
Unlike storytelling or fingerplay, music appreciation can go deeper. And the key is this:
Parents are the first ones to feel and appreciate music.
We can break it down into simple steps:
- Sense the movement – your child’s, your own, and the environment’s.
- Let sound arise naturally from that movement.
- Allow melodies or lyrics to flow freely, without force or expectation.
If we truly listen, we’ll discover rhythms hidden in our everyday life:
- When your child returns from school…
- When you’re cooking together in the kitchen…
- While bathing them…
- On the drive to work…
All of these ordinary moments are rich with inspiration for musical connection.
